Open-source alternatives: FAQ

Quick answers to common questions

What counts as an open-source alternative here?

Only projects whose repository carries a licence approved by the Open Source Initiative, such as MIT, Apache-2.0, GPL, AGPL or MPL. Every page lists at least 5 of them. Tools with public code under source-available licences (BSL, SSPL, Fair Source and similar) are shown separately and never counted as open source.

Are open-source alternatives free?

The software is free to use, study, change and share under its licence. Running it still costs something: a server, upgrades and backups, unless you pay for a hosted or supported edition, which many of these projects offer.

How are the licences checked?

Each project's licence is read from its own repository page or LICENSE file, and the date of the last check is shown on every page. Archived or explicitly unmaintained projects are left out.

Can I suggest a project?

Yes. Submit it through TechLogHub's submit page. Open-source projects listed on TechLogHub are linked from these pages when they fit.
