Open-Source Typeform Alternatives (2026)

Typeform is known for conversational, one-question-at-a-time forms and surveys. Open-source options cover the same ground, from polished form builders to full research-grade survey platforms, and let you keep responses on your own infrastructure.

Every tool below is under an OSI-approved licence (AGPL-3.0, GPL-2.0-or-later, OSL-3.0 or MIT), checked against its repository. Typebot, a popular chatbot-style builder that is sometimes called open source, is listed separately because its licence is not OSI-approved.

Licences checked against each repository on November 7, 2026.

1. Formbricks

AGPL-3.0

Best for: In-app and link surveys with a no-code editor

Calls itself a free and open source surveying platform for in-app, website, link and email surveys. Offers a no-code editor, templates, user targeting, and integrations with tools such as Slack, Notion, Zapier and n8n. Docker is the documented self-hosting method.

Strengths

  • + No-code survey editor and templates
  • + Targets surveys at user groups without code changes
  • + Integrations with Slack, Notion, Zapier, n8n

Trade-offs

  • − Enterprise code under apps/web/modules/ee needs a licence key
  • − Aimed at product feedback more than designer-style forms

2. HeyForm

AGPL-3.0

Best for: Closest conversational-form experience

An open-source form builder for conversational forms, surveys, quizzes and polls. Supports many input types, conditional logic, custom CSS theming, webhooks and CSV export, with Docker files included for self-hosting.

Strengths

  • + Conversational forms with conditional logic
  • + Visual theming and custom CSS
  • + Drop-off and completion analytics

Trade-offs

  • − Fewer built-in integrations than Typeform
  • − AGPL requires sharing modifications if you offer it as a service

3. OpnForm

AGPL-3.0

Best for: Typeform-style builder with embedding

An open-source form builder with a no-code editor, unlimited forms and submissions, embedding, form logic, captcha protection and analytics. Integrates with Slack, webhooks and Discord. Self-hosting is documented at docs.opnform.com.

Strengths

  • + No-code builder with form logic
  • + Embeddable on other sites
  • + Captcha protection and analytics

Trade-offs

  • − Enterprise code under api/app/Enterprise is proprietary
  • − Self-hosting involves a multi-service stack

4. LimeSurvey

GPL-2.0-or-later

Best for: Research-grade surveys with advanced logic

Describes itself as the world's number one open-source survey platform. Offers 30+ question types, skip logic and branching, multilingual surveys, a RemoteControl API, and SAML and LDAP integration. Runs on PHP with MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB or MSSQL.

Strengths

  • + Unlimited surveys and 30+ question types
  • + Multilingual surveys and GDPR-oriented data handling
  • + Mature, API and plugin support

Trade-offs

  • − Interface is more traditional than Typeform's
  • − Needs a PHP web server and a database

5. KoboToolbox

AGPL-3.0

Best for: Field data collection and humanitarian surveys

kpi is the server for KoboToolbox, an API for managing forms, a question library, sharing settings, reports and data export. Interactive API docs are served at /api/v2/docs/.

Strengths

  • + API-first form and project management
  • + Question library and sharing controls
  • + Data export and reports built in

Trade-offs

  • − Built for data collection, not designer-style forms
  • − README advises running a release branch in production, not main

6. Form.io

OSL-3.0

Best for: Developer-focused forms with an API

A form and data management platform for progressive web applications with a drag-and-drop form builder and embeddable forms. Run it with Docker Compose or manually with Node.js and MongoDB.

Strengths

  • + Drag-and-drop builder with an API behind it
  • + Embeds in Angular and React apps
  • + Docker Compose setup

Trade-offs

  • − Developer-oriented rather than a ready-made survey tool
  • − OSL-3.0 is a copyleft licence

7. SurveyJS Form Library

MIT

Best for: Embedding forms inside your own app

A free and open-source JavaScript form library that renders JSON-defined forms and surveys in React, Angular, Vue and plain JavaScript. Responses are collected in the browser and sent to any backend you choose, so no SurveyJS server is needed.

Strengths

  • + Multi-step forms, quizzes and conditional logic
  • + Works with React, Angular, Vue and plain JS
  • + You choose the backend and database

Trade-offs

  • − A library to embed, not a hosted form tool
  • − Survey Creator and Dashboard have separate terms; check their pages

Often called open source, but aren't

Public source code, but under licences the Open Source Initiative doesn't approve. Fine to use; read the terms first.

  • Typebot (Functional Source License (FSL))

Source is public and self-hosting is possible, but the README says the code is under a Functional Source License, a Fair Source licence that is not OSI-approved.

Open-source Typeform alternatives: FAQ

Quick answers to common questions

Is there an open-source alternative to Typeform?

Yes. HeyForm and OpnForm are conversational form builders under AGPL-3.0, Formbricks focuses on product surveys, and LimeSurvey is a long-established full survey platform under GPL-2.0-or-later.

Which Typeform alternative can I self-host with Docker?

Formbricks, HeyForm, OpnForm and Form.io all document Docker-based setups. LimeSurvey and KoboToolbox can also be self-hosted but follow their own install guides.

Is Typebot open source?

Typebot's code is public, but its README says it is protected under a Functional Source License, which is not an OSI-approved open-source licence. It is listed under non-open-source options on this page.

Are Formbricks and OpnForm fully open source?

Their cores are AGPL-3.0, but both keep some enterprise code under separate licences (apps/web/modules/ee in Formbricks, api/app/Enterprise in OpnForm). The AGPL parts are open source, and the enterprise folders need their own licence.

Can I import my Typeform responses?

Typeform lets you export responses as files, and most of these tools can import or work with CSV data, but forms themselves usually have to be rebuilt. Check each project's documentation for import options.

Maintain an open-source Typeform alternative?
