What is a URL slug?

A slug is the human-readable identifier at the end of a URL — the my-first-post in example.com/blog/my-first-post. A good slug contains only lowercase ASCII letters, digits and a separator, so it never needs percent-encoding and reads cleanly in a browser bar, a log file, or a shared link.

This generator does the full normalization pipeline as you type: lowercases the text, strips accents by Unicode-decomposing characters and dropping the diacritic marks (é becomes e, ü becomes u), removes everything that isn't a letter, digit, space or hyphen, then collapses whitespace runs into your chosen separator and trims leading or trailing separators. It all happens in your browser — the text you paste is never uploaded anywhere.

When to use it

Use it whenever a title needs to become an identifier: blog post permalinks in a CMS that doesn't auto-slug (or auto-slugs badly), documentation page paths, file and folder names for exported reports, HTML anchor ids, or slugs for database records and S3 keys.

The separator choice matters. Hyphens are the right default for URLs — search engines treat a hyphen as a word boundary, while underscores glue words together — so use "-" for anything public-facing. Underscores suit code-adjacent identifiers and filenames in snake_case ecosystems, and dots occasionally fit versioned or namespaced artifacts. Whatever you pick, the character count shown under the result helps you keep slugs short; concise slugs are easier to share and less likely to be truncated in previews.

Example

Paste the headline "10 Tips & Tricks: Améliorer votre Café !" and the tool produces 10-tips-tricks-ameliorer-votre-cafe. The ampersand and colon vanish, the accented French characters flatten to plain ASCII, and the stray spaces collapse into single hyphens. Switch the separator to "_" and it becomes 10_tips_tricks_ameliorer_votre_cafe without re-pasting. The "Copy link to this result" button gives you a URL that reopens the tool with the same text and separator loaded — handy when agreeing on a slug convention with a teammate.

How to use the Slug Generator tool

  1. 1

    Paste your title or phrase

Any text works — punctuation, accents and mixed case are all handled.

  2. 2

    Pick a separator

Hyphen for URLs and SEO, underscore for code-style identifiers, dot for namespaced names.

  3. 3

    Copy the slug

The slug updates live as you type; copy it or share a permalink to the exact setup.

Frequently asked questions

How are accented and non-Latin characters handled?

Accented Latin characters are decomposed and their diacritics stripped, so café becomes cafe. Characters with no ASCII base form — such as Chinese, Cyrillic or Arabic script — are removed rather than transliterated, so check the output when slugifying non-Latin titles.

Should I use hyphens or underscores for SEO?

Hyphens. Search engines treat hyphens as word separators, so ten-tips is indexed as two words, while ten_tips may be treated as one token. Underscores are fine for internal identifiers where search indexing is irrelevant.

Does the tool guarantee unique slugs?

No — it's a pure text transform. Two different titles can normalize to the same slug ("Cafe!" and "Café"), so uniqueness checks and suffixing (-2, -3) belong in your CMS or application layer.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. Slugification is a few string operations running entirely in your browser, so titles from unpublished drafts or internal documents stay on your machine.
