What lorem ipsum text is and where it comes from

Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin used as placeholder copy in layouts, mock-ups and templates. It looks like real text, with a natural mix of short and long words and punctuation, but it carries no meaning, so reviewers look at typography, spacing and hierarchy instead of reading the copy. The standard passage is adapted from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC; words were cut and altered, which is why dolorem ipsum (pain itself) became the familiar Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet. Typesetters have used it for centuries, and it spread into desktop publishing and then web design, which is why so many people still call it lipsum after the long-running lipsum.com site.

This dummy text generator builds sentences of 6 to 14 words from a bank of words taken from the classic passage, occasionally adds a comma, and groups four to seven sentences into a paragraph. Random selection happens in your browser each time you press Generate, so you get a fresh block whenever you need one, and nothing is fetched from a server.

Paragraphs, sentences, words and HTML output

Choose a count and a unit. Paragraphs (up to 50) suit article templates, blog layouts and CMS seed content. Sentences (up to 200) fit card descriptions, testimonials and list items. Words (up to 2,000) are handy for headlines, button labels or filling a field to an exact length when you are testing validation or truncation, for example checking that a product title is cut off cleanly after 60 characters.

That matters more than it sounds: a reviewer who sees random Latin without the familiar opening sometimes reports it as a bug or as a translation error. Untick it when you want blocks that do not all begin the same way, such as several cards on one screen.

Tick Wrap in HTML <p> tags to get each paragraph wrapped as <p>…</p> on its own line, ready to paste into an HTML file, a JSX component, a Markdown document that allows HTML, or a rich text editor's source view. In plain mode, paragraphs are separated by a blank line, which most editors and CMS fields treat as a paragraph break. When not to use placeholder text

Lorem ipsum is ideal early, when the layout is the question. Swap in real or realistic copy before usability testing and before sign-off, because real content is usually longer, has longer words in languages such as German, and contains headings, links and lists that lorem ipsum does not. Also check that no placeholder text ships: searching your build output for "lorem" before a release is a cheap safeguard, since search engines index whatever is on the page.

If you are already in an editor, you may not need a web page at all. In VS Code and other editors with Emmet, typing lorem and pressing Tab expands to about 30 words, and lorem10 gives exactly ten. In JavaScript tests, the @faker-js/faker package offers faker.lorem.paragraphs(3).
