Breadcrumb Schema Generator
Generate BreadcrumbList structured data (JSON-LD) — desktop-only in Google since 2025
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "BreadcrumbList",
"itemListElement": [
{
"@type": "ListItem",
"position": 1,
"name": "Home",
"item": "https://example.com"
}
]
}
</script>What is a BreadcrumbList schema?
BreadcrumbList is schema.org markup that describes the navigation path from your homepage down to the current page — the same trail your on-page breadcrumb UI already shows, but expressed as machine-readable JSON-LD. On desktop, Google uses it to replace the plain URL shown under a search result with a breadcrumb trail (Home › Category › Product), which makes the result easier to scan and signals where the page sits in your site's hierarchy.
On mobile it no longer does. Since 23 January 2025 Google shows only the site's domain name above mobile results, in every language and region, having removed the breadcrumb trail because it truncated on narrow screens. Since most sites take the majority of their impressions on mobile, plan for the visible trail as a desktop-only benefit; the reason to ship the markup everywhere is the hierarchy signal, which Google reads regardless of what it renders.
Each entry in the itemListElement array is a ListItem with a position, a name, and an item URL. Position numbers must be sequential starting at 1, and they must reflect the actual path a user would click through, not an arbitrary list of pages.
When to use it
Add BreadcrumbList markup to any page more than one level deep — category pages, product pages, blog posts nested under a blog index, or documentation pages nested under a docs section. It matters most for large sites (e-commerce catalogs, documentation hubs, multi-category blogs) where the URL alone doesn't communicate where a page fits, and it's low-effort to generate once your site's navigation structure is fixed.
Unlike FAQPage and HowTo markup, this one is not deprecated: BreadcrumbList is still a supported Google structured data type, still validated by the Rich Results Test, and still reported in Search Console. Judge it on the hierarchy signal rather than the desktop-only trail, and skip it for flat sites with no real hierarchy — a single-page site or a blog with no categories has nothing meaningful to encode, and an artificial breadcrumb trail doesn't help.
Example
For a product page at https://shop.example.com/mens/jackets/rain-jacket-navy, add four items: "Home" → https://shop.example.com, "Men's" → https://shop.example.com/mens, "Jackets" → https://shop.example.com/mens/jackets, and the final crumb "Navy Rain Jacket" with no URL (the current page doesn't need a self-referential item value). The preview panel shows the resulting trail, and the JSON-LD panel gives you the exact script tag to paste into that page.
How to use the Breadcrumb Schema Generator tool
- 1
List each page in order
Start with Home and add one row per level down to the current page.
- 2
Add URLs for every crumb except the last
The final item is the current page and doesn't need a URL; every ancestor should have one.
- 3
Check the preview
The preview strip shows exactly how the trail reads before you ship it.
- 4
Copy the schema
Paste the generated script tag into the page's <head> and validate with Google's Rich Results Test.
Frequently asked questions
Does the last breadcrumb need a URL?
No — schema.org and Google both treat the final item as the current page. Omitting its item URL is standard practice; the generator only adds an item field when you provide one.
Do position numbers need to start at 1?
Yes. Google's parser expects itemListElement positions to be sequential integers starting at 1 with no gaps, which is exactly what this generator assigns automatically based on row order.
Do breadcrumbs still show on mobile search results?
No. On 23 January 2025 Google stopped rendering breadcrumb trails in mobile results across all languages and regions — mobile now shows the domain name only, because the trail truncated on small screens. Desktop results still show the full trail from your BreadcrumbList markup.
Is BreadcrumbList deprecated like FAQ and HowTo schema?
No. FAQ rich results were deprecated in May 2026 and HowTo rich results in 2023, but BreadcrumbList is still a supported Google type: it still renders on desktop, the Rich Results Test still validates it, and Search Console still reports on it.
Will this override the breadcrumb rich result Google shows?
It replaces the plain URL breadcrumb Google infers from your site structure with your explicit markup, but Google still decides at render time whether to show it — there's no guarantee, just improved odds and accuracy, and on mobile it won't be shown at all.
Is my breadcrumb data sent to a server?
No. The JSON-LD is generated entirely client-side from what you type; nothing is uploaded or logged.
