What is gRPC?
A high-performance RPC framework from Google that uses HTTP/2 and Protocol Buffers for fast, strongly typed service-to-service communication.
Definition
gRPC is a remote procedure call framework built on HTTP/2 and Protocol Buffers. Services define their API in a .proto file, and code generators produce type-safe clients and servers in Go, Java, Python, TypeScript, and a dozen other languages. HTTP/2 multiplexing plus compact binary encoding makes gRPC substantially faster than JSON-over-REST for internal traffic, and it supports four call styles including bidirectional streaming. Browsers cannot speak native gRPC, so public-facing APIs typically use gRPC-Web or a REST gateway while keeping gRPC for service-to-service calls.
