What is keyword density?

Keyword density measures how often a term or phrase recurs relative to the total word count of a piece of content — expressed as a percentage (occurrences ÷ total words × 100). It's a rough proxy for whether content reads as naturally on-topic or as artificially over-optimized. Search engines have moved well past simple density-matching for ranking, but unnaturally high repetition of a phrase (keyword stuffing) is still a signal associated with low-quality, manipulative content and can hurt rather than help rankings.

This tool tokenizes your text, strips punctuation, filters out words shorter than your minimum length, and counts frequency per unique word — it does not (yet) group multi-word phrases, so it measures single-term density.

When to use it

Run a density check after drafting an article or product page to sanity-check that your target keyword appears often enough to be clearly on-topic without dominating the text — a useful gut-check before publishing, especially for SEO-driven content teams working across many writers. It's also handy for auditing existing pages that rank poorly: unusually high density (often above 3-5% for a single term) can indicate stuffing left over from older SEO tactics that now works against you.

Use the min-length filter to exclude short filler words ("a", "is", "the") that would otherwise dominate the top of the list without being meaningful signal words.

Example

Paste a 500-word blog post about "email marketing automation" and set min length to 4. If "email" appears 18 times in 500 words, that's a 3.6% density — on the high side for a single term and worth trimming a few instances or swapping in synonyms like "inbox" or "campaign" to read more naturally.

How to use the Keyword Density Checker tool

  1. 1

    Paste your content

Drop the article, page copy, or draft you want to check into the text area.

  2. 2

    Set a minimum word length

Filter out short filler words so the results surface meaningful terms.

  3. 3

    Click Analyze

See every word's count and density percentage, sorted by frequency, with a visual density bar.

  4. 4

    Adjust and re-check

Trim or rephrase over-repeated terms, then re-run to confirm density has normalized.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an ideal keyword density percentage?

No universally correct number — modern search engines rank on relevance, semantics, and user intent, not a density target. As a rough sanity check, most natural writing lands under 2-3% for any single term; consistently going well above that is a sign of stuffing rather than a ranking booster.

Why does a common word like 'the' dominate my results?

Raise the minimum word length filter (e.g. to 4 or 5 characters) to exclude short function words that appear frequently in any text but carry no topical signal.

Does this check multi-word phrases?

No, this tool counts single-word frequency only. For phrase-level density (e.g. "content marketing strategy" as one unit) you'd need a separate n-gram analysis.

Is my content uploaded anywhere?

No. Tokenizing and counting happen entirely in your browser with plain JavaScript — the text you paste is never sent to a server.
