FastAPI: A Modern, High-Performance Python Web Framework

@tiangoloProject Author

FastAPI

FastAPI framework, high performance, easy to learn, fast to code, ready for production

Test Coverage Package version Supported Python versions

FastAPI is a modern, fast (high-performance), web framework for building APIs with Python based on standard Python type hints. The design philosophy behind FastAPI is simple: you write clean, concise code, and the framework handles the heavy lifting of validation, serialization, and documentation. Built on top of Starlette for the web parts and Pydantic for the data parts, FastAPI delivers production-ready performance with an emphasis on developer happiness.

Overview

  • Fast: Very high performance, on par with NodeJS and Go (thanks to Starlette and Pydantic). One of the fastest Python frameworks available.
  • Fast to code: Increase the speed to develop features by about 200% to 300%.
  • Fewer bugs: Reduce about 40% of human (developer) induced errors.
  • Intuitive: Great editor support. Completion everywhere. Less time debugging.
  • Easy: Designed to be easy to use and learn. Less time reading docs.
  • Short: Minimize code duplication. Multiple features from each parameter declaration. Fewer bugs.
  • Robust: Production-ready with automatic interactive documentation.
  • Standards-based: Based on OpenAPI (Swagger) and JSON Schema, fully compatible with these standards.

Ecosystem and Community

From small prototypes to large-scale production services, FastAPI has become a core component in many teams’ API-first strategies. It has inspired a thriving ecosystem and a network of sponsors that help sustain the project and its tooling. The ecosystem includes:

  • Sponsors across tiers, with Keystone, Gold, and Silver supporters providing ongoing backing to keep the project vibrant and maintainable.
  • Community contributions and real-world production deployments that demonstrate FastAPI’s reliability in internet-scale services.

[FastAPI Conf '26 — Amsterdam, October 28, 2026] FastAPI Conf is a coming together of the global FastAPI community, with speakers from teams using the framework in production. See the event’s details and enjoy talks, demos, and hands-on sessions that bring the framework to life in practice. The conference is a great way to learn from peers and to see the latest in the FastAPI world.

[FastAPI mini documentary] There’s a FastAPI mini documentary released at the end of 2025, available online for those who want a visual tour of the philosophy, people, and code behind the project.

Typer: the FastAPI of CLIs

If you’re building a CLI application to be used in the terminal rather than a web API, Typer is FastAPI’s little sibling. Typer aims to bring the same design principles — fast to learn, intuitive, and robust — to command-line interfaces.

Requirements and Core Tech

  • FastAPI stands on the shoulders of giants:
  • Starlette for the web parts.
  • Pydantic for the data parts.
  • The standard approach is to declare your types in Python, and FastAPI will validate, serialize, and document everything automatically.

Installation: Getting FastAPI on Your System

  • Create and activate a virtual environment.
  • Install FastAPI with the standard optional dependencies:
  • Command:
    • pip install "fastapi[standard]"
  • Note: Put "fastapi[standard]" in quotes to ensure compatibility across terminals.

A Quick Start: A Minimal Yet Functional API

  • Create a file main.py with a FastAPI app. A minimal example looks like this:

from fastapi import FastAPI app = FastAPI()

    @app.get("/") def read_root(): return {"Hello": "World"}

    @app.get("/items/{itemid}") def readitem(itemid: int, q: str | None = None): return {"itemid": item_id, "q": q}

  • Run it with a development server. The FastAPI CLI supports a dev command that automatically detects your app in main.py and runs a server via Uvicorn. By default, auto-reload is enabled for local development.

  • Check the running app at:

  • Documentation at http://127.0.0.1:8000/docs (Swagger UI)

  • Alternative docs at http://127.0.0.1:8000/redoc (ReDoc)

Interactive API Documentation: Swagger UI and ReDoc

  • After starting the server, the interactive API documentation appears automatically. Swagger UI is provided out of the box, enabling you to explore endpoints, parameters, and responses with real-time validation.

  • Swagger UI image: Swagger UI sample

  • ReDoc is also available for a different presentation and navigation of API structure.

  • ReDoc image: ReDoc sample

Upgrade Your Endpoint: Request Bodies with Pydantic

  • As your API grows, you’ll want to accept structured data in request bodies. With Pydantic models, you can declare a body with standard Python types, and FastAPI will automatically validate, convert, and document it.

Example upgrade (body for PUT /items/{item_id}):

  • Define a Pydantic model:

    from pydantic import BaseModel

class Item(BaseModel): name: str price: float is_offer: bool | None = None

  • Use it in an endpoint:

    @app.put("/items/{itemid}") def updateitem(itemid: int, item: Item): return {"itemname": item.name, "itemid": itemid}

  • After editing, the FastAPI dev server reloads automatically, and the documentation updates to reflect the new body schema. Swagger UI shows the new input fields, and the Redoc view updates as well.

What You Declare, You Get: Parameters, Validation, and Documentation

  • FastAPI lets you declare types for:
  • Path parameters: item_id: int
  • Query parameters: q: str | None = None
  • Request bodies: item: Item
  • Headers, cookies, form data, and files
  • Why this matters:
  • Editor support with advanced autocompletion
  • Runtime validation with clear error messages on invalid data
  • Automatic conversion from JSON to Python types
  • Automatic OpenAPI documentation for interactive docs and client generation
  • Two built-in UI options for docs: Swagger UI and ReDoc

Two Interfaces for Documentation

  • Swagger UI: FastAPI’s default interactive API explorer, instantly showing each endpoint, its methods, parameters, and models.

  • Swagger UI image: Swagger UI detailed view

  • ReDoc: An alternative documentation UI that emphasizes readability and structure for larger APIs.

  • ReDoc image: ReDoc detailed view

From Code to API: The Surprising Power of a Single Declaration

  • The same function signature can drive path parameters, query parameters, and request bodies. For example, a single endpoint definition with item_id: int and item: Item yields:

  • Path parameter validation (ensuring item_id is an int)

  • Optional query parameter handling

  • Validation, parsing, and conversion of the request body into a Python object

  • Automatic OpenAPI schema generation for client code generation and docs

  • The ecosystem enables advanced patterns like:

  • Dependencies for DI (Dependency Injection)

  • Security and authentication with OAuth2 and JWT

  • Deeply nested JSON models

  • GraphQL integration with libraries like Strawberry

  • WebSockets and background tasks

  • Testing with HTTPX and pytest

Deploying Your API (Optional) and the FastAPI Cloud Experience

  • FastAPI can be deployed to any cloud provider. It remains standards-based, enabling you to move between hosting environments with minimal friction.
  • Optional FastAPI Cloud provides end-to-end deployment tooling:
  • Command: fastapi deploy
  • Example output:
    • Deploying to FastAPI Cloud… ✅ Deployment successful! 🐔 Ready the chicken! Your app is ready at https://myapp.fastapicloud.dev
  • The CLI detects your FastAPI app automatically and handles authentication via the browser if needed.
  • This cloud-first path is sponsored by the same team behind FastAPI, designed to streamline building, deploying, and accessing APIs.

Performance: Fast and Production-Ready

  • Independent benchmarks (TechEmpower) show FastAPI running under Uvicorn as one of the fastest Python frameworks, with performance approaching the leaders in the space.
  • The key contributors to these results are the underlying Starlette for asynchronous web components and Pydantic for data modeling and validation, both of which are tightly integrated with FastAPI.

Dependencies and Installation Details

  • FastAPI depends on Pydantic and Starlette. When you install with the standard group:

  • fastapi[standard] includes:

    • Pydantic’s email-validator
    • httpx (for tests)
    • jinja2 (for templates)
    • python-multipart (form parsing)
    • uvicorn (server) and uvicorn[standard] (for performance)
    • fastapi-cli (the fastapi command)
    • fastapi-cloud-cli (deploy to FastAPI Cloud)
  • You can install FastAPI without the standard extras if you prefer a slimmer footprint:

  • pip install fastapi

  • If you want to keep the standard stack but skip the cloud CLI, you can install:

  • pip install "fastapi[standard-no-fastapi-cloud-cli]"

  • Additional optional dependencies include:

  • pydantic-settings and pydantic-extra-types for enhanced data modeling

  • orjson or ujson for faster JSON responses

  • This modular installation approach lets you tailor FastAPI to your project needs while preserving its core features.

Documentation and Standards: OpenAPI and JSON Schema

  • At the heart of FastAPI is a commitment to open standards:
  • OpenAPI for API description and client generation
  • JSON Schema for data validation constraints
  • These standards enable:
  • Interactive documentation
  • Auto-generated API clients across multiple languages
  • Clear, machine-readable contracts that help teams build, test, and integrate

Real-World Adoption and Endorsements

  • Many organizations have embraced FastAPI as a core tool for API development:
  • Microsoft engineers have used FastAPI extensively for ML services and integration into Windows and Office products.
  • Uber has used FastAPI to power REST servers for model predictions (Ludwig integration).
