What is Session Storage?

Browser key-value storage scoped to a single tab, cleared when that tab closes, useful for transient per-tab state.

Definition

sessionStorage shares the Web Storage API with localStorage but scopes data to one tab's browsing session: each tab gets an isolated copy (a duplicated tab clones the data at that moment, then diverges), and closing the tab discards everything. That isolation makes it a natural fit for multi-step form progress, one-time interstitials, or per-tab filters where cross-tab leakage would cause bugs—two open orders in two tabs must not share draft state. Like localStorage it is synchronous, string-only, origin-bound, and readable by any script on the page, so secrets don't belong there either.
