What is IndexedDB?

The browser's asynchronous, transactional NoSQL database for storing large amounts of structured data client-side.

Definition

IndexedDB is a low-level browser database storing structured clones of JavaScript objects—including Blobs and typed arrays—in object stores with indexes, transactions, and cursors. Unlike localStorage it is asynchronous and roomy: quota is dynamic, commonly a share of available disk rather than a fixed 5 MB. It underpins offline-first apps, caching layers for service workers, and local persistence in tools like Figma and Google Docs. The raw event-based API is notoriously awkward, so most teams use wrappers—idb for a thin Promise layer, Dexie.js for queries, or sync-capable layers like RxDB and PouchDB replicating with CouchDB.
