What is GitOps?
Operating infrastructure and deployments by storing desired state in Git, with automated agents reconciling clusters to match the repository.
Definition
GitOps treats a Git repository as the single source of truth for a system's desired state — Kubernetes manifests, Helm values, Terraform configs — and uses automated controllers to make reality match. Tools like Argo CD and Flux watch the repo, detect drift, and apply changes continuously. Every production change becomes a pull request, giving code review, audit history, and rollback-by-revert for free. Because the agent pulls from Git rather than a CI system pushing credentials into the cluster, the security posture improves too. GitOps pairs naturally with declarative infrastructure-as-code.
