What is ARIA?

A set of HTML attributes that convey roles, states, and properties of UI widgets to assistive technologies.

Definition

ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) is a W3C specification that adds semantics HTML alone cannot express—role="dialog", aria-expanded, aria-live regions announcing dynamic updates—so screen readers can interpret custom widgets like comboboxes and tab panels. The first rule of ARIA is not to use it: a native <button> beats a <div role="button"> because it ships keyboard behavior and focus handling for free. Incorrect ARIA is worse than none, since it makes false promises to assistive technology. The WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices Guide documents expected keyboard patterns for each widget role.
