What does this tool do?

It wraps whatever you type or paste into a Blob with the correct MIME type for your chosen extension, then triggers a browser download — no server round trip, no account, no size limit beyond your browser's memory. It supports seven common text formats: .txt, .md, .json, .csv, .html, .xml, and .yaml, each tagged with its proper MIME type so the OS and other apps recognize the file correctly when you open it.

This exists for the gap between "I have text in a browser tab" and "I have a file on disk" — copy-pasting into a text editor and manually saving works, but this skips that step entirely when you just need the file quickly.

When to use it

Use it to save a config snippet, log excerpt, or generated output from another tool (this site's JSON Formatter or a chat response, for instance) straight to a file without opening a text editor. It's also useful for quickly producing a throwaway CSV or JSON fixture for testing, saving Markdown notes, or exporting any text-based content a web app displays but doesn't offer a native download for.

The live character count, line count, and byte size at the bottom help you sanity-check the content before downloading — useful for catching an accidental double-paste or confirming a JSON blob is the size you expect.

Example

Paste a JSON API response, set the filename to api-response and the type to json, and click Download File — the browser saves api-response.json with the content type application/json, so double-clicking it opens correctly in your default JSON viewer or code editor instead of a generic text app.

How to use the Text to File tool

  1. 1

    Type or paste your content

Any plain text — code, notes, JSON, CSV rows, Markdown, whatever you need saved as a file.

  2. 2

    Set a filename

No extension needed here — that's controlled by the format dropdown next to it.

  3. 3

    Choose a file type

txt, md, json, csv, html, xml, or yaml — each downloads with the matching MIME type.

  4. 4

    Click Download File

Triggers an immediate browser download with no upload step involved.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded anywhere before downloading?

No. The file is assembled as a Blob in your browser and downloaded directly via a local object URL — the content never leaves your machine or touches a server.

Why did we skip adding a shareable permalink for this tool, since the input is plain text?

Unlike JSON Formatter or Regex Tester, the point of this tool is the downloaded file itself, not a result someone else would want to reopen and re-edit in the browser — and pasted content here can be arbitrarily long (a full log file, a large JSON export), which doesn't fit cleanly into a URL fragment the way a short pattern or snippet does.

Does it validate JSON, CSV, or other structured formats before download?

No — it downloads exactly what you typed, byte for byte, regardless of format. Use JSON Formatter first if you need to validate or pretty-print JSON before saving it.

Is there a size limit?

Only your browser's available memory. Since nothing is uploaded, even large pastes download quickly.
