What does an image cropper do?
Cropping extracts a rectangular region from an image and discards everything outside it, producing a new, smaller image at exactly the dimensions you specify. This tool draws your source image onto an HTML canvas at a given X/Y offset and width/height, then reads that region back out as a new PNG — the underlying pixels aren't resampled or scaled, just cut, so there's no quality loss inside the crop area.
Unlike resizing, which stretches or shrinks the whole image, cropping changes composition: it lets you remove unwanted background, tighten a subject, or force an odd-shaped photo into a specific aspect ratio (square for an avatar, 16:9 for a thumbnail) without distorting anything.
When to use it
Use it to prepare avatar or profile photos that need to be square, trim a screenshot down to just the relevant window or panel, remove dead space around a product photo before uploading it to a marketplace, or pull a specific detail out of a larger image for a thumbnail. Because the X/Y/width/height fields are plain number inputs, it's also useful when you know the exact pixel region you need — say, from a design spec — rather than eyeballing a drag handle.
If you need to crop and then also resize or change format, do the crop first: cropping on the full-resolution source preserves the most detail, and you can follow up with Image Resizer or Image Format Converter on the cropped result.
Example
Upload a 1920×1080 screenshot, set X=460, Y=140, W=1000, H=800 to isolate a centered dialog box, then click Crop — the output is a new 1000×800 PNG containing just that region, shown side by side with the original for comparison. Download saves it as cropped.png at the exact dimensions you specified, ready to drop into documentation or a bug report.
How to use the Image Cropper tool
- 1
Upload or drop an image
The tool reads its natural dimensions so you know the valid crop range.
- 2
Set the crop region
Enter X, Y offset and width, height in pixels — defaults to a 200×200 box in the top-left corner.
- 3
Click Crop
Draws the selected region onto a canvas and renders the result next to the original.
- 4
Download the result
Saves the cropped region as a new PNG file at the exact dimensions you set.
Frequently asked questions
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. Cropping happens entirely on an in-browser canvas — the file is read locally and never transmitted anywhere.
Does cropping reduce image quality?
No, cropping just cuts out a pixel region; it doesn't resample or compress anything inside that region. The output is a lossless PNG at the crop's exact dimensions.
Why is there no drag handle — just number fields?
This tool uses precise numeric X/Y/width/height inputs rather than a draggable overlay, which is faster when you know the exact pixel region you need and avoids the imprecision of dragging with a mouse.
Can I crop and then resize in one step?
Not in a single pass — crop first to get the exact region, then run the cropped PNG through Image Resizer if you also need specific final dimensions.
