Open-Source Container Orchestration Platforms (2026)

Container orchestration platforms schedule and manage containers across clusters, handling placement, scaling, networking and self-healing. Kubernetes is the standard, and most alternatives are distributions or management layers on top of it.

We compare Kubernetes itself, lightweight distributions (K3s, k0s, MicroK8s), an immutable OS (Talos Linux), management and enterprise layers (Rancher, OKD, Portainer) and Docker Swarm's swarmkit. Source-available schedulers such as Nomad are excluded.

Tools, licences and pricing checked against vendor and repository pages on November 7, 2026.

What to look for

  • •Operational weight: control plane resources and upgrade process
  • •Edge and single-node suitability
  • •Built-in networking, ingress and storage
  • •Management UI and multi-cluster support
  • •Security posture: immutable OS, hardening
  • •Licence and CNCF alignment

Open-Source Container Orchestration Platforms: FAQ

Quick answers to common questions

Is Nomad open source?

Current Nomad releases use the Business Source License, so it is excluded.

Which is lightest?

K3s, k0s and MicroK8s are designed to be small.

Is Docker Swarm still an option?

SwarmKit is maintained, but its ecosystem is smaller than Kubernetes.

Is Portainer OSI-licensed?

Portainer CE uses the zlib licence, which is OSI-approved.
