OSI-licensed open source

Best Open-Source Documentation Platforms (2026)

Documentation platforms publish product docs, API references and internal knowledge. Open-source options fall into two families: docs-as-code static site generators that build from Markdown in Git, and wiki-style apps with browser editors.

Eight tools are compared: five static generators and three self-hosted wikis. Licences were verified on the repositories, and we flag Material for MkDocs because its maintainers announced end of life in 2027.

Tools, licences and pricing checked against vendor and repository pages on November 7, 2026.

  • •Search, versioning and localisation
  • •Theming and component flexibility
