Open-Source Audit Management and Auditing Tools (2026)

Full-featured open-source audit management suites (planning, workpapers, findings tracking) are rare, and many commercial audit products have no open-source equivalent. In practice, technical teams assemble audit evidence with open-source scanners and inventory tools, then track findings in their ticketing or GRC process.

Because the slug is thin, this page broadens the angle to open-source IT, security and cloud auditing tools that generate audit evidence: asset discovery (Open-AudIT), host and standards scanning (Lynis, OpenSCAP) and cloud posture checks (Prowler, ScoutSuite, Cloud Custodian, Steampipe). Licences were read from each repository.

Tools, licences and pricing checked against vendor and repository pages on November 7, 2026.

What to look for

  • •Audit scope: hosts, network inventory, cloud accounts or compliance frameworks
  • •Support for recognised benchmarks such as CIS and standards like PCI-DSS
  • •Report formats and evidence exports suitable for auditors
  • •Automation and CI integration for continuous auditing
  • •Licence and maintenance activity

1. Open-AudIT

AGPL-3.0

Best for: IT asset and configuration auditing · Free, open source (community); paid Professional and Enterprise editions available (see vendor pricing)

Open-AudIT is a network discovery and inventory tool that audits devices and software across a network. It stores results and offers reports, useful for IT asset and configuration audits.

Strengths

  • + Agentless discovery
  • + Useful audit-ready inventory reports

Trade-offs

  • − Some features reserved for paid editions
  • − Inventory rather than workflow tool

2. Lynis

GPL-3.0

Best for: Host hardening and compliance auditing · Free, open source (commercial Lynis Enterprise from CISOfy available)

Lynis is a security auditing tool for Linux, macOS and Unix systems that performs hardening and compliance checks and reports suggestions. It runs from the command line without installing agents.

Strengths

  • + Simple to run
  • + Clear hardening suggestions

Trade-offs

  • − Command-line oriented
  • − Reports need processing for formal audits

3. OpenSCAP

LGPL-2.1

Best for: Benchmark and policy compliance scanning · Free, open source

OpenSCAP provides tools to scan systems against SCAP security policies and benchmarks for configuration and vulnerability compliance, and generates reports.

Strengths

  • + Standards-based SCAP scanning
  • + Widely used in Linux distributions

Trade-offs

  • − Setup and content selection can be complex
  • − Linux-centric

4. Prowler

Apache-2.0

Best for: Cloud security posture and compliance audits · Free, open source (hosted Prowler Cloud available, see vendor pricing)

Prowler is an open-source security tool for assessing cloud accounts across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud against best practices and frameworks. It produces reports for audit evidence.

Strengths

  • + Many checks mapped to frameworks
  • + CLI and CI friendly

Trade-offs

  • − Findings need triage
  • − Hosted features are paid

5. ScoutSuite

GPL-2.0

Best for: Multi-cloud configuration reviews · Free, open source

ScoutSuite is a multi-cloud security auditing tool that reviews cloud environment configuration and generates an HTML report of risk areas.

Strengths

  • + Multi-cloud coverage
  • + Readable HTML reports

Trade-offs

  • − Less frequently updated than other tools
  • − Point-in-time reports

6. Cloud Custodian

Apache-2.0

Best for: Continuous policy-as-code cloud governance · Free, open source

Cloud Custodian is a rules engine for managing cloud resources, enforcing policies for security, cost and governance. Policies are written in YAML and can run on schedules or events.

Strengths

  • + Policy as code with automatic remediation
  • + Multi-cloud support

Trade-offs

  • − Requires policy authoring
  • − Not a reporting tool by itself

7. Steampipe

AGPL-3.0

Best for: SQL-based audit queries and benchmarks · Free, open source (CLI); Turbot Pipes hosted offering available (see vendor pricing)

Steampipe lets you query cloud and SaaS APIs with SQL and run compliance benchmark mods. It is useful for ad-hoc audit questions and evidence collection.

Strengths

  • + SQL interface for audit questions
  • + Large plugin collection

Trade-offs

Open-Source Audit Management and Auditing Tools: FAQ

Quick answers to common questions

Is there open-source audit management software for workpapers and findings?

Full audit management suites are scarce in open source. Teams usually combine scanners with a ticketing or GRC system for tracking findings.

Which tool is best for CIS benchmark checks?

OpenSCAP and Lynis support hardening and benchmark-style checks on hosts, and Prowler maps cloud checks to frameworks.

Can these tools replace a human auditor?

No. They provide evidence and detect misconfigurations, but auditors still judge scope, controls and risk.

What about CISO Assistant?

CISO Assistant Community is a GRC tool with a mixed AGPL and commercial licence, so we could not list it as fully OSI open source.
