Best AI Code Review Tools for GitHub and GitLab (2026)

AI code review tools read a pull request, its diff and (increasingly) the surrounding codebase, then leave review comments, summaries and suggested fixes. They do not replace a human approver, but they catch obvious bugs, missing tests and style drift before a teammate spends time on the PR.

Pricing models differ more than features: per-seat (CodeRabbit, Sourcery, Bito, Graphite), credits or usage (Greptile, Qodo, Cursor Bugbot, Copilot's AI credits), or free and self-hosted (PR-Agent with your own LLM key). Measure noise as well as catches: a reviewer that leaves twenty low-value comments per PR gets ignored quickly.

Tools, licences and pricing checked against vendor and repository pages on November 8, 2026.

What to look for

  • •Git platforms supported: GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps
  • •Codebase context beyond the diff (repo indexing, linked issues)
  • •Signal-to-noise: configurable rules, severity thresholds, learning from feedback
  • •Pricing per seat vs per review/credit at your PR volume
  • •Data handling: retention, model providers, self-hosting or bring-your-own-key
  • •Free tier or free plan for open-source repositories

Strengths

  • + Purpose-built for PR review with summaries and walkthroughs
  • + Per-developer pricing is predictable

Trade-offs

  • − Per-seat cost adds up for large teams
  • − Can be chatty until rules are tuned

2. GitHub Copilot code review

Commercial

Best for: Teams already paying for GitHub Copilot · Included with paid Copilot plans; usage billed in AI credits

Copilot code review is available on all paid Copilot plans and can be requested on GitHub.com, GitHub CLI, Mobile and major IDEs, with Azure DevOps in preview. It reads repository instructions (.github/copilot-instructions.md, *.instructions.md, AGENTS.md), can run automatically on new PRs, and consumes AI credits (GitHub estimates $0.05 to $1 for a Lite review and $0.25 to $5 for a Balanced one). By default its reviews do not count toward required approvals.

Strengths

  • + Native to GitHub with no extra app to install
  • + Uses the same instruction files as other agents

Trade-offs

  • − Usage-based credit cost per review
  • − GitHub-centric; Azure DevOps support still preview

Commercial

Best for: GitHub teams adopting stacked PRs who want review in the same tool · Hobby free; Starter $20, Team $40 per user/month (annual); Enterprise custom

Graphite combines stacked pull requests with AI Reviews (its reviewer is called Diamond on the product page), which flag bugs and security issues and support custom rules written in plain language. Pricing lists Hobby free, Starter $20 and Team $40 per user per month billed annually, and Enterprise custom.

Strengths

  • + Review, stacking and merge queue in one product
  • + Custom rules in plain language

Trade-offs

Bugbot is Cursor's PR reviewer focused on logic bugs with a low false-positive rate; fixes can be applied in the Cursor editor or by a background agent. It is usage-based on Individual and Teams plans with no separate subscription; Cursor says the average review costs $1.00 to $1.50.

Strengths

  • + Focus on real bugs rather than style comments
  • + Hand-off to Cursor for fixes

Trade-offs

  • − Product page names only GitHub
  • − Per-review cost varies with PR size

Qodo (formerly Qodo Merge for PR review) offers agentic PR review on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps plus IDE and CLI tooling. Pro Team uses pooled credits at $0.015 per credit after a 14-day free trial; Enterprise (30+ users) adds SSO, audit logs, bring-your-own LLM keys and on-prem deployment. Qodo has no permanent free tier except for qualified open-source projects.

Strengths

  • + Supports four major Git platforms
  • + On-prem and single-tenant options at Enterprise

Trade-offs

  • − No permanent free plan
  • − Credit-based pricing needs forecasting

6. PR-Agent

MIT

Best for: Self-hosted AI review with your own model keys · Free and open source; you pay your LLM provider

PR-Agent is the open-source review agent originally built by Qodo, now donated to and maintained by the community in the The-PR-Agent GitHub organisation. It runs /review, /describe, /improve and /ask on GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Azure DevOps and Gitea, using your own LLM API key.

Strengths

  • + Runs in CI or as a webhook on your infrastructure
  • + Widest Git platform support in this list

Trade-offs

  • − You own setup, upgrades and model costs
  • − Community-maintained after the hand-off; check release cadence

7. Greptile

Commercial

Best for: Teams that want codebase-aware reviews without per-seat pricing · Starter free (50 credits); Pro $1/credit; Enterprise custom

Greptile reviews PRs with full-codebase context. Pricing is credit-based with no seat fees: Starter is free for one developer with 50 credits a month, Pro is $1 per credit (Base review 1 credit, Plus 3, Apex 10), and Enterprise is custom. It is free for qualified non-commercial OSI-licensed projects.

Strengths

  • + No seat fees; credits shared across the org

Best AI Code Review Tools for GitHub and GitLab: FAQ

Quick answers to common questions

What is AI code review?

AI code review uses large language models to read a pull request and leave comments, summaries and suggested fixes automatically, typically as a GitHub or GitLab app. It complements human review rather than replacing the final approval.

Can GitHub Copilot review pull requests?

Yes. Copilot code review is available on all paid Copilot plans. You can request it on a PR or configure automatic reviews; it uses AI credits, and by default its review does not count toward required approvals.

Is there a free open-source AI code review tool?

PR-Agent is MIT-licensed and self-hosted; you supply an LLM API key. Several commercial tools also have free options: Sourcery is free for public repositories, Greptile is free for qualified non-commercial OSI-licensed projects, and Graphite has a free Hobby plan.

Which AI code review tools support GitLab and Bitbucket?

Qodo and PR-Agent support GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and Azure DevOps (PR-Agent also Gitea). Bito supports GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket. Sourcery supports GitHub and GitLab. Graphite and Cursor Bugbot focus on GitHub.

How do I reduce noisy AI review comments?

Add repository instructions or custom rules describing what matters, raise severity thresholds, exclude generated files, and give feedback on bad comments where the tool supports learning. Start with summaries plus high-severity findings, then widen scope.
