Open-Source Segment Alternatives (2026)

Segment is a customer data platform: collect events once, then route them to analytics, marketing and warehouse tools. It is a proprietary hosted product priced by tracked users. Open-source options cover its jobs in pieces: event collection and routing, reverse ETL, and the analytics destinations themselves.

Every tool below is under an OSI-approved licence (MIT, Apache-2.0, AGPL-3.0 or GPL-3.0-or-later), checked against its repository. RudderStack, Snowplow and Tracardi are often called open source but use source-available terms, so they are listed separately at the end.

Licences checked against each repository on November 7, 2026.

1. Jitsu

MIT

Best for: Closest Segment replacement for event collection

An open-source event data platform whose README calls it an alternative to Segment. Collects events and sends them to warehouses and other destinations.

Strengths

  • + Built as a Segment alternative
  • + Self-hostable
  • + MIT licence

Trade-offs

  • − Smaller destination catalogue than Segment
  • − You operate the pipeline

2. PostHog

MIT

Best for: Analytics with events, replays and flags

A platform for building products with analytics, session replay and feature flags. The ee directory carries a separate licence.

Strengths

  • + Analytics and tooling in one
  • + Self-hostable
  • + Large feature set

Trade-offs

  • − Self-hosting is heavy
  • − ee/ folder is not MIT

3. Apache Unomi

Apache-2.0

Best for: A customer profile backend

Stores user profile information and is mostly used as a backend for A/B testing and personalisation.

Strengths

  • + Apache Software Foundation project
  • + Profile and segment storage
  • + Apache-2.0 licence

Trade-offs

  • − Developer-oriented
  • − No hosted destinations

4. Dittofeed

MIT

Best for: Event-driven messaging journeys

A self-hostable platform for sending messages to users across email, SMS, push and chat using broadcasts or event-driven journeys.

Strengths

  • + Journeys built on events
  • + Multichannel messaging
  • + MIT licence

Trade-offs

  • − Messaging layer, not a collection pipeline
  • − Narrower than a full CDP

5. Multiwoven

AGPL-3.0

Best for: Reverse ETL from your warehouse

An open-source reverse ETL and data activation platform that syncs data from warehouses to business tools.

Strengths

  • + Activates warehouse data
  • + Self-hosted
  • + Active development

Trade-offs

  • − Does not collect events
  • − AGPL-3.0 licence

6. Matomo

GPL-3.0-or-later

Best for: Self-hosted web analytics

The leading free and libre open analytics platform, a self-hosted alternative to hosted analytics tools.

Strengths

  • + Full analytics ownership
  • + Mature and widely deployed
  • + GPL-3.0-or-later licence

Trade-offs

  • − Analytics, not a routing hub
  • − Needs PHP hosting

Often called open source, but aren't

Public source code, but under licences the Open Source Initiative doesn't approve. Fine to use; read the terms first.

  • RudderStack (Elastic License 2.0)

The server repository states it is released under the Elastic License 2.0, which is source-available and not OSI-approved.

  • Snowplow (Snowplow Limited Use License Agreement)

From January 2024 newer core pipeline versions moved to the Snowplow Limited Use License Agreement, which is not an OSI-approved licence.

  • Tracardi (MIT with Commons Clause)

Public source, but the Commons Clause restricts selling the software, so it is not OSI open source.

Open-source Segment alternatives: FAQ

Quick answers to common questions

Is there an open-source version of Segment?

Jitsu is the closest, and its README describes it as an alternative to Segment. No single tool covers every Segment feature, so you may combine several.

Is RudderStack open source?

Its server repository is released under the Elastic License 2.0, which is not an OSI-approved open-source licence.

Is Snowplow still open source?

Snowplow's repository states that since January 2024 newer core pipeline versions use the Snowplow Limited Use License Agreement.

Can I keep my Segment destinations?

Not automatically. Check each tool's destination list and expect to rebuild some integrations.

What is reverse ETL?

It syncs data from your warehouse back into tools such as CRMs. Multiwoven focuses on this job.

Maintain an open-source Segment alternative?

List it on TechLogHub and we'll review it for this page.
