Open-Source Apache NiFi Alternatives (2026)

Apache NiFi is itself open source (Apache-2.0), described as an easy to use, powerful and reliable system to process and distribute data. People look for alternatives when they want code-first pipelines, scheduled orchestration or a lighter visual tool.

Every tool below is under an OSI-approved licence (Apache-2.0), checked against its repository. Two popular tools that are often grouped with them, n8n and Airbyte, use source-available licences and are listed separately.

Licences checked against each repository on November 7, 2026.

What you're replacing

  • •Moving and transforming data between systems
  • •Visual flow design with routing and scheduling
  • •Orchestrating batch and event-driven pipelines
  • •Connecting APIs, databases and message queues

1. Apache Airflow

Apache-2.0

Best for: Code-defined batch workflows

A platform to programmatically author, schedule and monitor workflows.

Strengths

  • + Workflows written as code
  • + Large community and integration set
  • + Scheduling and monitoring UI

Trade-offs

  • − Not a streaming or record-level flow tool
  • − Needs scheduler and metadata database to run

2. Kestra

Apache-2.0

Best for: Declarative, event-driven orchestration

An open-source, event-driven orchestration platform for data, AI and infrastructure workflows.

Strengths

  • + Event-driven triggers
  • + Declarative workflow definitions
  • + Single platform for several workflow types

Trade-offs

  • − Younger project than Airflow
  • − Fewer community recipes

3. Node-RED

Apache-2.0

Best for: Visual flows for devices and APIs

A visual, low-code tool for connecting devices, services and APIs through event-driven flows.

Strengths

  • + Browser-based flow editor
  • + Light to run
  • + Good for IoT and API glue

Trade-offs

  • − Not built for heavy bulk data movement
  • − Less data-governance tooling than NiFi

4. Apache Hop

Apache-2.0

Best for: Visual data integration and ETL

A data integration and orchestration platform that aims to facilitate all aspects of data and metadata orchestration.

Strengths

  • + Visual pipeline and workflow design
  • + Metadata-driven approach
  • + Same Apache Software Foundation home as NiFi

Trade-offs

  • − Batch ETL focus rather than flow routing
  • − Smaller community

5. Apache Camel

Apache-2.0

Best for: Enterprise integration patterns in code

An open source framework that connects applications and services through hundreds of prebuilt connectors, with routes written in Java, YAML or XML.

Strengths

  • + Hundreds of connectors
  • + Routes in Java, YAML or XML
  • + Embeds in existing JVM apps

Trade-offs

  • − No visual designer in the framework itself
  • − Requires developers

6. Dagster

Apache-2.0

Best for: Asset-oriented data pipelines

A cloud-native orchestrator for building, running and monitoring data assets such as tables, datasets, ML models and reports.

Strengths

  • + Asset-centric model
  • + Strong local development
  • + Apache-2.0

Trade-offs

  • − Python-centric
  • − Concepts take time to learn

7. Apache SeaTunnel

Apache-2.0

Best for: Large-scale data integration

A multimodal, high-performance, distributed, massive data integration tool.

Strengths

  • + Built for distributed data integration
  • + Many source and sink connectors
  • + Apache Software Foundation project

Trade-offs

  • − Less visual than NiFi
  • − Smaller English-language community

8. Prefect

Apache-2.0

Best for: Python workflow orchestration

A workflow orchestration framework for building resilient data pipelines in Python.

Strengths

  • + Pure Python workflows
  • + Retries and scheduling built in
  • + Easy to start locally

Trade-offs

  • − Code-first, no flow canvas
  • − Some features tied to hosted offering

Often called open source, but aren't

Public source code, but under licences the Open Source Initiative doesn't approve. Fine to use; read the terms first.

  • n8n (Sustainable Use License)

Source code is public and self-hosting is allowed, but the Sustainable Use License limits how it can be used commercially, so it is not OSI-approved.

  • Airbyte (MIT and Elastic License 2.0 (mixed))

The repository shows both MIT and Elastic License 2.0 badges. Elastic License 2.0 is source-available, not OSI-approved, so check which parts you depend on.

Open-source Apache NiFi alternatives: FAQ

Quick answers to common questions

Is Apache NiFi open source?

Yes. Apache NiFi is licensed under the Apache License 2.0 and is a project of the Apache Software Foundation.

What is the best open-source alternative to NiFi?

It depends on the job. Node-RED and Apache Hop are the nearest visual tools; Airflow, Dagster and Prefect suit code-first orchestration.

Is n8n open source?

No. n8n's code is public but under the Sustainable Use License and an enterprise licence, which are source-available rather than OSI-approved.

Is Airbyte open source?

Partly. Its repository shows MIT and Elastic License 2.0 badges, and Elastic License 2.0 is not an OSI-approved licence.

Can these tools replace NiFi's flow routing?

Not exactly. NiFi is built around routing data flows. Orchestrators like Airflow schedule tasks instead, so a migration usually changes how pipelines are designed.
